"While the true birth of "The Vizsla" as a hunting breed, is forever lost in mystical memories, the birth of EVERY Vizsla begins as a puppy. Every Vizsla owner was once a puppy too. Together they grow into... one golden vizion." dlb

While puppies are cute & Vizsla puppies are cutest, the Vizsla is NOT for everyone & every family. They are very active, are inclined to be like velcro, are usually more intelligent than their owners & make poor behavior choices that could possibly endanger the puppy's or another's life and its welfare when bored, ignored or uneducated.

Vizsla Parables Found True When Researching Magyar Past.

* Parable I- When turning over rocks seeking an answer for a question; for every answer discovered, at least two more questions without answers are found.

* Parable II- "At this time"- Historicans can only use the resources at hand. There is no guarantee that existing resources will become available on an "as needed" sequence either. Therefore expect to see the phrase "at this time & a date" in many places of Vizsla Vizipedia.

* Parable III- The more you explore, the more you experience until you BELIEVE you know more but what is true is the more you know, the less you know "for certain".

* Parable IV- Magyar fanciers will become more like the past than the present.

* Parable V- The more things change, the more they stay the same. That is a part of magyarisation & the Hungarian in all of us likes it that way... for all time.

The Parables are "true" because patrons are so confoundedly "Magyar" & a direct result of magyarisation.  You will become like those who came before you sooner and later.
Don't fight it. Enjoy it. We do !!!

Vizsla Imports

The Hungarian Vizsla that is found outside of "greater Hungary" is based on the import. While this website is intended to be worldwide, for the most part it is indeed based on the USA "at this time". How & if that changes depends on the readers, their text & photo submissions & time.

There are two types of Imports; 1. Foreign blood born outside the USA 2. Foreign blood born inside the USA (one generation). To the best of our ability dog text colors are: USA dogs are brown bold text; Foreign dogs are blue bolded text;  USA dogs of foreign blood born outside the USA (imports) are teal bold text; USA dogs of foreign blood born inside the USA are in maroon bold text. Any questionable or contradictory information should be black bold text. If an individual's nationality (registry) or import status can not be determined (at this time) that pedigree information is unbolded.

Vizsla Breeding Strategies The World Over

1. Breed what you have, BELIEVING you have THE best Vizsla of your times to the dog you think will further your cause (at that time) which is of course always synonymous with breed improvement.

2. There are two types of inbreeding. First degree inbreeding is mother X son, daughter X father, brother X sixter. Second degree is half-brother X half-sister, uncle to neice & nephew to aunt.

3. There are two types of linebreeding. Linebreeding is not inbreeding. First degree linebreeding is within 2 steps of descent, of a total of 4 possible matings- Grandfather to Grand-daughter, Grandmother to Grandson, Grandson to Granddaughter, first cousin to first cousin. Second degree linebreeding is showing a relationship not as close & usually with at least one common ancestor within four generations, such as same Grandparent, Grandsires and/or Granddams, whether the dogs have the same Grandsire or Granddam on the paternal or maternal side.

4. Outcrossing is when there is no common ancestor within 4 generations, yet within the breed.

5. Crossbreeding is a mating of parents between two separate breeds, but each purebred itself. These are technically 100% mongrels, unless they are used for later breeding purposes or falsely registered as one or the other breed. Crossbreeding is a part of Vizsla history from the very beginning to today & happens the world over. When it is done there is a tendency of "waves" & can be done at different times for the same reasons as before or newer reasons. Crossbreeding was done for at least five reasons. They are breeding for what they do, how they look, for survival, for breed re-creation & competition. In the 1920 re-creation it is likely that crossbreeding to those from another breed were registered as Vizslas in Stud Book B "at that time." Puppies from such matings likely went into Stud Book A only if they possessed only smooth Vizsla traits. (mo...dlb)

6. Mongrel breeding is the crossbreeding of registered individuals to unregistered individuals & was done before the studbooks were created & before newly created studbooks were closed. In the 1920 Vizsla recreation the mongrel form of crossbreeding likely ended with the ""X individual"
being registered as a Vizsla in Stud Book B "at that time." Puppies from such unions were likely not registered in Stud Book A unless they possessed all smooth Vizsla traits. (mo....dlb)

Vizsla Problems Encountered When Researching Pedigrees

Studying historical languages involved in pedigrees is never easy. That is made more difficult with the Vizsla for many reasons. First the Hungarian language is unlike any of its surrounding languages. It is Finno-Ugric in origin & protected for centuries  because of the cupping of the mountain ranges surrounding the Danube river...despite invasions & occupations from other countries & influx of other languages. The Vizsla, like its people, exists because of "Nationality" and their ironclad will to remain as their ancestors were. Further complicating all of that has been greater Hungary's refusal to deal well with its minorities & forcing Magyarisation upon all they touched every time the Hungarians regained control from occupations. This means that many cities have had numerous name changes. Many of the same words in Hungarian are spelled differently from other areas of Hungary.

Further complicating a complex & impossibly proud peoples was the 1920 Treaty of Trianon which forced greater Hungary to become several countries; which led to Hungarian Vizslas living outside of Hungary which in turn, created new registries. The Treaty created a wave of nationalism never seen before. That manifested itself for many into specific dog & horse breeding. At the same time the Hungarian were forced to re-create the Vizsla because of the Magyar thirst for all things foreign (Vizsla crossbred with English Pointer & Irish Setter 1880-1920). It was the creation of these additional registries by re-named Hungarians that ended up saving breed credibility for the world as the Studbooks from the Orszagos registry's location, per Jeno Dus, was never revealed. European history indicates the studbooks were destroyed in a fire. Both stories could be true.

It is ironic & keeping with tradition that same country (Slovakia) who claimed the true creation of the Vizsla when the Magyars came through the Carpathian Pass (Co-incides with Count Bela Hadik's historical rendition) would be responsible for its second & lasting modern re-birth (1920 & 1945). And too the Slovaks carried irony a bit farther since they also gave a re-birth to the Wirehaired Vizsla as well. In true "Magyar" tradition the Slovaks claim to be the birth of today's Wire Haired Vizsla. That is likely not as true as today's WHV fanciers might  like, as there is documentation in Mihalyi Kende's historical writings that Wires existed in Hungary in the late nineteenth century & up to WWI. It was said they looked exactly like the Wire the Slovaks created.

Further complicating both the smooth Vizsla's European history is the willingness of the Slovaks to breed individuals with Wire parent (s) to smooth & Wires, then using individuals in whatever "variety" their physical traits (wire/smooth) were. It is assumed this was done for two reasons. The other Wire/Smooth breeds did it that way too & War. It is known that Dr Ivan Osborn imported 40 Vizslas & one of them (probably Harry Selle; per gundogpedigrees.com) was registered as a Wirehaired Vizsla in Europe similarly as the smooth Slovakian Vizsla & a smooth Vizsla in the USA. Regardless of where & when Harry was bred, his blooded DNA exists in many smooth Vizsla pedigrees around the world.

Other issues that complicate Vizsla pedigree research are typos, a lack of paper, same names, names copied wrong, owner's names being added until the dog & owner name becomes the dog's name in some places but not in other registries, using incorrect Roman Numerals or dropping needed Roman Numerals, language mistranslation (there is no US word for the Hungarian word "sarga"), obvious mistakes (like thinking GY (Champion) was a kennel name), direct interference by the Russians who promised the Slovaks they would exchange pedigree data on their exports, no way of copying existing pedigrees (once the original was destroyed, proof was gone), War, greed by Europeans after WWII when they were trying to survive & intentionally crossbred dogs who had supposedly lost their original registrations & mistakes being made that get transferred into the future over & over.

Vizsla Historical Discrepancies

And there is last, but certainly not least, the discrepancies in the breed history. This website will try to document, address & correct if possible, as many of the discrepancies or imponderables as possible. To do a good job of that we need the reader's help. If you have information to add, even if it is bits; please send. If you think you have found an error or discrepancy; please notify.

Order of Business

There is no particular method to our madness except that we are trying first to focus on the fifties, sixties & seventies with the stuff we already have. No page, not one, is complete. With your help however, they can become as complete as possible. Text submissions whether long or short are always welcomed & never at a charge. Photo submissions go up free IF sized exactly 1 1/2 inches tall AND 150 dpi. Resizing if $5 per photo & $5 per graphic including framing. For $25 one may submit ten photographs needing re-sized & ten graphics for those photos. Photos are on display for the life of the three SITmUP websites.

We praise the ideal that "stickability" and "magyarisation" are
important components for Vizsla Breed Improvement.

A large part of why (wry smile) most photos are presented different from the original is this website has found itself unwittingly following the Magyars & those who researched it as just like them. That is called "magyarization" (;-o)
